About Education

Since 1978, Kativik Ilisarniliriniq (K.I.) has been the exclusive provider of academic services for Nunavimmiut. Education programs are offered in all of the 14 Nunavik communities, in Inuktitut as first language and in French and English as second languages. Nunavik Educational Services

Located in Kuujjuaq, K. I.’s Education Services is where all curriculum development work is coordinated. Their services can be summarized as follows:

  • Development and implementation of a trilingual curriculum, educational programs, and services that mainstream Inuit culture, language, and identity while developing learning skills.
  • Kindergarten to Secondary 5 education.
  • Adult education and vocational training services.
  • A sponsorship program for post-secondary beneficiary students.
  • A teacher training program for Inuit teachers to obtain their teaching certification.

About Nunavik Students

All educational levels combined, 30% of Nunavik residents are direct users of our educational services. The fact that over half of the Nunavik Inuit population is younger than 25 years old explains why all of our regular sector students, as well as the vast majority of their parents, belong to this group.

Testimonials

My most memorable moment in school was pitching my very first business idea to Adel Yassa at KRG with a very good outcome. The next step for me would be to take a graphic design class to further my skills. My advice to youth would be: Don’t let anything stop you from chasing your dreams.

Testimonials

My favourite classes in school are social studies and Inuktitut. My most memorable moment during high school was bonding with my teachers and being encouraged by them, and being a part of the Aupaluk basketball team. I am most proud of how much I have accomplished. Teaching physical education is what I want to do next, but not right away. My advice to other youth is to focus on school. Keep up the good work and you’ll be glad you did!

I graduated from Nunavik Sivunitsavut this year. My favourite class was art. My most memorable moment was when my classmates and I went out on the land during culture week to Pingualuit National Park. I am most proud that I completed NS. Right now, I am looking forward to going home. I have no idea what my next steps will be right now. My advice to other youth in high school is to keep studying and go on to post-secondary education.

My name is Jean Patrick Langlois Uqaituk. In high school, my favourite class was history and now it’s business. My most memorable moment in high school was when I graduated—it was so awesome seeing my family members being so happy for me. My proudest moment of this year is moving to Kuujjuaq and starting something new in this community. I’m looking forward to opening my coffee shop—Kaapirvik—in Kuujjuaq, and serving people good quality coffee. Aside from that, I’m not sure what’s next for me, but I hope it will be something awesome. My advice to others is to work hard and never give up on your dreams.

Secondary 3 was my favourite year with Marcel Gaudet as my teacher at Innalik School in Inukjuak; he was my favourite teacher and helped make this year the most memorable year of my high school years. I am most proud of the fact that I improved in math. I am looking forward to working at the school with Khan, the Behaviour Technician, when school is over. I want to stay in my community after graduating.
